short biography
Italo Calvino (1923-1985) was a restless neo-illuminist, a tenacious and combative rationalist tied to a lay and open modern humanism. More important events in his life include the second world war, the Resistance, joining the Italian Communist Party (PCI) following the war and his leaving it following events in Hungary and his joining the editorial board of the publishing house Einaudi which opened up new cultural opportunities. His career as a writer can be divided into three stages: neo-realist (with a strong fairytale element); fairy-tale and allegorical-symbolical representation of reality and his own personal experiences ("Il Visconte Dimezzato", "Il Barone Rampante", "Il Cavaliere Inesistente"); and the period which may be called the "combining" period where his interest in scientific disciplines, semiotics and structuralism are particularly evident in his narrative work
