Alighieri Dante

short biography
Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) was born in Florence into a wealthy lower-upper class family. His writing started in the early 1280s and his friendship with Cavalcanti was of great importance. Through his acquaintance with Brunetto Latini he drew on the example of philosophically and politically influenced poetry. In his first work, Vita Nuova, he remembers and celebrates his love for Beatrice who died in 1290. In 1300 he became a prior and attempted to oppose the attentions of the papacy in order to defend the independence of the council. He was moved by a spirit of justice and rigorist-Franciscan ideal against the power of the Church. Exiled in 1302 following the victory of the black Guelph faction. During his exile he wrote the rest of his works including Divine Comedy, a sacred poem which is the fruit of brilliant imagination and realistic strength. It is an extraordinary synthesis of his literary and political experience and of his philosophical and religious convictions.
