Cym
No Man's Land



"I remember how exciting it was, to drive out of the Netherlands into
Belgium. We always had to stop on this short piece of land between
the two borders. I would jump out of the car, just to be
able to say "I am in No Man's Land". That was twenty years ago.
These days, driving from the Netherlands into Belgium, there
is not much more than a sign next to the road, telling you the
name of the country you are entering."

"Mi ricordo quanto era eccitante guidare dall'Olanda al Belgio.
Dovevamo fermarci sempre in quel fazzoletto di terra tra i due
confini. Schizzavo fuori dall'auto, solo per poter dire "sono nella
terra di nessuno". Ciò risale a vent'anni fa, oggi, tra l'Olanda e
il Belgio si scorge nulla più che un'indicazione stradale con il
nome del paese nel quale stai entrando."



L’installazione ‘No Men’s Land’ rappresenta il viaggio di Cym lungo e tra i confini dell’Europa centrale. La raccolta di fotografie scattate nella terra di nessuno é stata elaborata e tradotta in grafici astratti, realizzati con l’ausilio di soli file HTML, CSS e un’immagine in pixel trasparente 16x16 per fissare le dimensioni delle tavole. I grafici sono visibili solo su browser internet o programmi in grado di gestire file HTLM, e ricordano in un certo qual modo i rossi confini puntinati sulle mappe, linee di puntini rossi che non si vedono altrove. Gli scatti, presi in diverse occasioni, ed i grafici da essi derivati saranno poi collegati tra loro ricostruendo così la mappa del viaggio di Cym nella terra di nessuno.
‘ No Men’s Land’ è la continuazione del progetto ‘Cym at home’
(http://cym.at/home) ma questa volta Cym non viaggia più tra paese e paese ma ripercorre le linee politiche che li definiscono. Le foto dimostrano che queste linee puntinate rosse sulla mappa si traducono nella realtà in un fiume, un campo di granoturco, un vecchio albero, una collina verde, un ciuffo d’erba, un bimbo che gioca nel bosco, ma anche un vecchio bunker, un cancello chiuso, una stazione di polizia in disuso e tutta una serie di segnali in tante lingue diverse.
Cym (NL/A) ha studiato grafica e lavora dal 1996 come web designer.
È membro dell’international artists group ’42. Dal 1999 viaggia in giro per
l’Europa con un computer portatile e una macchina fotografica digitale.
I suoi progetti vanno da installazioni interattive a fotografie digitali a laboratori di web design, fumetti e altro.

The installation "No Men's Land" is a journey by Cym along and between centraleuropean borders. A collection of photos, all taken in no-man's land, have been turned into abstract graphics. These graphics were created using only HTML, some CSS and a 16x16pixel transparent image to fix the sizes of the HTMLtables.
The graphics exist only when seen through a web browser or program
that can display HTML, like the red-dotted borders only exist on maps and
can no where be seen in reality as red-dotted lines. The photos, taken on many different occasions, and the abstract graphics made out of them, are connected with each other and together form a map of Cym's journey through "No Men's Land'.
"No Men's Land" is, in a way, a continuation of the "Cym at home" project
(http://cym.at/home). But this time Cym is no longer traveling from country to
country, but following the political lines that define them. The photos show
what these red-dotted lines on the map look like in reality: a river, a cornfield, an old tree, a green hill, a piece of grass, a child playing in the woods. But also: an old bunker, a closed gate, an empty police station and a lot of signs in many different languages.
Cym (NL/A) studied graphic design and has been working as a webdesigner
since 1996. She is a member of the international artists-group "42". Since 1999 she is traveling around Europe with laptop and digital camera. Her projects include interactive installations, digital photography, workshops webdesign, comics and more.
